Discrimination is when a person is treated less favourably than someone else because of:
age
disability
gender reassignment
marriage and civil partnership
pregnancy and maternity
race
religion or belief
sex
sexual orientation
These are known as protected characteristics, and under the Equailty Act 2010 you cannot be punished or discrimated against because of these factors. If you are, you can make a claim with no limit on damages. This applies to any contact with services or businesses, employed or not.
You are still protected even if you don't have the protected charatistic in question, all it takes if that they thought you did. For instance, if a male is fired for being pregnant they are still protected dispite not being able to be so: all it take is that the person or company who discriminated against you believed it to be true.
With Oakmoor's Independent Complaint System you can report any concerns confindentally. Our experts are completly neutral and will then mediate in line with this legistation, ensuring you are represented fairly at all times.
